HEALTH & WELFARE

Dancers are a wonderful lot.  They offer comfort and prayer, congratulations and welcome.

Don’t underestimate the power of prayer and community.  I will be pleased to include dancers’ messages.

Ironically, not only is the recipient likely to benefit, the community grows stronger by its response.

11/20/09 (Knoxville, TN): Update on Judy Moore (from Liz Prince via Gene Severance)

Thank you to all of our dancer-friends who have called, written and sent emails wishing me well! I am so enjoying hearing from each of you.

I am feeling very well. I am so lucky to have been given another gentle tap on the shoulder. This second warning has given me another opportunity to take a serious look at all the stress in my life. It's been a tough year. We've had a very heavy travel schedule in '09 and I've been challenged ever since my first stroke a year ago ... learning & remembering dances has been more difficult.  Another added stress that I've been experiencing this past year is performing demos with my "handicapped brain". Demos have become extremely stressful for me. I am used to being competent and physically able so I went blithely on with my life, not fully realizing, until this second episode, how much pressure I was putting on myself to carry on as usual without having the old fully-functioning brain I could count on.

We now have to weigh our priorities and make some new choices and decisions. My health must be a priority, especially in view of this recent episode. Our vegetarian diet over the past four months has lowered my genetically predisposed "high" cholesterol from 235 down to 208 and I am now taking Zocor as an added precaution. We have a few months free this winter with no dance preparation or traveling and we're looking forward to enjoying a relaxing life at home while taking a little hiatus from concerns of the dance. Healing takes the time it takes. For now, we will do all in our power to do what it takes and it remains to be seen if we will be able to make enough changes in our life to keep the stress out.

Thank you all for your concerns and kind words. Have a healthy and happy holiday season.

With love to you all . . .

Judy & Brent

Hi,

Judy had the stroke at 5:00 AM Friday morning. She has made a fantastic recovery. The only detectable evidence left is very slow speech and some missing words. She is home now and is on a blood thinner and a cholesterol lowering medication.  Very, very lucky.

11/15/09 (Sugarland, TX): Patricia Cox has returned home (from Patricia)

Sunday November 15, 2009, 8:30 am

It is good to be home. I don't really remember much about last Wed, Thurs or even Fri. I know what went on, but once I asked Ron to call 911, I went into survival mode and all I'm really sure about is how hard it was to breath. I got most of my details the same way you did, from Ron's rants and raves. Since I wasn't put on the ventilator this time. (thank God), I had to work a lot harder than the last time, for a lot longer. That wore me out, and really stressed my body. At least that is what the doctor's tell me. I made my first visit to my own pulmonologist on Friday. He changed my meds a little and the plan is to "aggressively attack" the asthma. He also told Ron to put me into the car and drive me to the Methodist ER (Sugar Land) so he could treat me himself (if it ever happens again). We thought that was a good idea. I'll be going to doctors on a weekly basis for a while, and here I thought I had my asthma under control.

I'm still sore where the chest tube hole and stitches are and a little short of breath due to the lung "trauma", but every day I find it easier to do things. The really strange thing is the subcutaneous emphysema (snap, crackle, pops) I have. These are pockets of air under my skin which are very sore (to the touch) in some areas and literally snap, crackle and pop, like bubble wrap, (when touched) in others. They move around too. Sometimes they are in my shoulder area, sometimes my neck and/or back. I've even felt them on my face. This condition is supposed to clear on it's own in a week or two.

The hospital bed's are a lot more comfortable now than used to be, but there's no place like home. The good thing was that I could adjust the knee and head to get my back and hip comfortable as well as make it easier to breath. Once Ron got me into a cool room, I began to feel better. The nurse's were so good to me, they tried their best to let me rest, but as you know, vitals every hour, breathing treatments, med's, x-rays, vampires, meals, doctors, etc., it's harder to rest than it sounds. Fortunately, my pain management stimulator is doing it's job on my back and I haven't had to deal with that too.

Keep the good thoughts and prayers coming, I know they are working because I'm still here.

Thank you !

Patricia

11/5/09 (Sugarland, TX): Patricia Cox was hospitalized (from Ron Cox)

Just a short note to let you know that Patricia had an asthma attack Wednesday which was pretty severe.  Her right lung also deflated.  After a trip to the emergency room to re-inflate the lung, she is in intensive care trying to get her asthma attack under control.

She is resting better today, but still needs your thoughts and prayers.

Her lung is healing, according to the last set of x-rays.  It was a very small leak, but nonetheless caused her right lung to deflate.  She spent Wednesday night on around the clock nebulizer, and that has helped to ease the breathing, slightly.

As of tonight, Thursday, they have reduced her breathing treatments to every two to four hours.  Plans right now are that she will be in ICU for a couple more days, at least.

Don’t want to bore all of you with the details, but it you are interested in more information, I will shoot you a note I have been composing about “You know it is going to be a bad day when 911 puts you on hold.”

Thanks for your thoughts and will keep you posted.

11/12/09 (San Angelo, TX): Update on Tony Speranzo (from Tony via Weavers List)

Hello Everyone,

Just wanted to let everyone know that I got home from the hospital last Friday after 2-1/2 weeks following open heart surgery to insert a heart pump.  It is called a Heart Mate II and you can find out information about it at www.thoratec.com if you like.  I am tethered to either an electrical power unit which operates on AC/DC or a pair of batteries which I have 4 pairs that I keep charged all the time.  I also have an emergency power unit that if need be will provide 12 hours of additional power.  The pair of batteries seem to last between 10 to 12 hours.

I'm doing fine and just got back from San Antonio a few minutes ago from seeing the doctor (3-1/2 hour drive).  He said everything looks great and my wounds from the surgery are healing nicely.  I don't have to go back to see him again until the 30th of November at which time I will be placed back onto the 1B Transplant list.  He stated that I will stay on the 1B list until I am close to the top and at that time he will put me onto the 1A list for a period of 30 days (that's the limit for someone not an inpatient).  This means that I could possibly have a new heart sometime between February and March of 2010.

Wish me luck.  I would also like to thank all of the individuals who sent well wishes to me when I was getting ready to go into the hospital.  There were so many that it is almost impossible to write each one individually.  So please forgive me for saying thank you to all in this e-mail.

Thanks again,

Tony Speranzo

10/14/09 (San Angelo, TX): Tony Speranzo scheduled for surgery (from Tony)

Hello Everyone,

I am sending this e-mail to notify you that the November issue of the TRDTA Newsletter may be late in arriving.  I am having open heart surgery next Tuesday, October 20th to have a Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) surgically implanted, and will be out of commission for anywhere from one to two weeks.  I am planning on educating Diane Slater my partner and significant other on how to produce the newsletter, however if I can't get her up and running in time, the newsletter may be late.

For those leaders reading this I would appreciate it if you could get your reports to me no later than next Tuesday.  Hopefully Diane will be able to pull your reports from my e-mail and get the November newsletter edition to the printer by Monday, October 26th.  If so it will not be late.

I'm hoping to be able to assist Diane in getting it put together and to the printer on time. Hopefully all will go well and it will get e-mailed and snail mailed on time.

For those interested I will be in the transplant ICU at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital Northwest, 2827 Babcock Road, San Antonio, TX 78229-4813.  Remember I will not be admitted until the morning of October 20th, 2009.  Anyone interested in finding out about the VAD I am having put in can go to www.thoratec.com  and check out the Heartmate II VAD at that web site.

Hey Guys :

Just wanted to keep you in the loop.  As per below, we're having a little get together in memory of Mom. See below for details.

Not sure if there are others down there, dancers, people she played cards with, who might be interested.  I don't know of anyone but you all may.

I'll see you there.

Shayna

==================================================

Shayna,

I've booked this room ( Thurs.  Nov. 12 at 1:30 in Rec 1 Ballroom ) for the Memorial for your mom.  We can have special presentations as well as the dvd.  Are you still here in Leisure World?  I would be glad to pick up any of the costumes this afternoon or next Monday (Gone to an Indiana Wedding from Tomorrow- Sun.)

We will provide simple finger food receptions i.e.  fruit, tea sandwiches, cookies, veggies, coffee, tea, lemonade, iced water.  Any suggestions?

What part do you wish to play?  I assume talk about your mom and tell us about the last chapter of her life.  We will have people fill in some of the activity things she did.  Anything in particular you wish to happen?

9/16/09: (Houston area)Carol Jacobson recovering (from Carol)

Want to thank all of you for your concern, prayers, e-mails, cards, etc. and to

clear up a little bit of what my medical problems actually are.

As most of you know I went into see a new cardiologist before Warren and I left to go

to Round-a-Rama at Purdue for an evaluation and some tests - e.k.g., echocardiogram

and a thallium stress test.  The results didn't come back until we were on our way -

actually heard from the doctor driving thru Mississippi.  At that time there was a

major problem in finding my medical records from 1997 when I had had 2 balloon

angioplasties (all files prior to 2005 were in archives due to the fact that the entire

practice had moved from Scurlock Tower to the new Memorial Professional Bldg and

a new computer system had not caught up with the backlog as yet).  The results from

the tests that were in showed I had a potassium deficiency and some narrowing of

the arteries but we were told to continue on to RAR - just not to "overdue it" and

increase my potassium intake with bananas, raisins, etc.  While we were gone

they would do an extensive search for my nuclear and cath lab records and I was

to call when we got home.

When we returned I called in and spoke with Dr Hust and was told all my records

were now in my file on his desk and he had discussed my condition with my endo-

cronologist and by brother and they all agreed I should have a heart catherization

as soon as possible to see exactly how things looked from the inside.

I went into Methodist Hospital at 6 AM on Sept 1st  for the procedure - it took a

little over three and a half hours.  They found that the main coronary artery that had

been 95% blocked in 1997 had indeed closed back up to 90% so they put a stint

in that one (in 97 they didn't make stints small enough for my arteries) and ballooned

open several more closures.  They also found some problems on the right side of

my heart but could not do anything to fix them at that time - will see if medication

helps and if not I will have to go back in at a later time and have them opened up.

If all had gone well I would have been able to come home around noon the next day.

However I developed a large hematoma in the groin area where the shunt had been

placed to insert the wires up to the heart.  A hematoma is not an infection - it is

a life threatening blood clot which has to be dissolved by applying extended heavy

pressure in the area until what felt like a brick has turned to sand.  This meant

that I had to stay flat on my back for another 10 hours.  After 24 hours I was

gotten up and taken for a walk around the hospital corridor and was hoping I was

going to go home at last.  Didn't happen - I developed another hematoma and had

to go thru the whole very painful procedure complete with another 10 hours flat

on my back.  The loss of blood caused by having the hematomas bleed out

internally left me with a huge potassium deficiency as well as causing me to be

anemic.  They gave me 3 bags of potassium intravenously in the hospital and I

am taking pills now that I'm home but unfortunately the whole ordeal has taken its

toll on my system and I'm having a rough time getting my energy back.

Hopefully my Iron and potassium levels will come back to normal in a few more

days - I have felt somewhat better since Sunday and my nap times have decreased

so that is good.

Hope to be back to our normal dancing routine by next week - we're going to

forget all the neat dances we learned at ICBDA and RAR if we don't come back soon.

Thanks for your concern.

Hugs,

Carol

9/16/09: Carol Jacobson recovering (from Mark & Pam Prow)

We need to continue to pray for Carol Jacobson’s recovery.  She went for a routine test and ended up having a stint put in.  She is home recovering also from an infection as result of the procedure.  I spoke with Carol at home and she said her energy level is so low that it is hard to function right now.   We need prayer for Carol to return to her normal energy level so we can have her back at the club with us.  Please add Carol to your prayer list as well.

Thanks,

Pam Prow

9/16/09: (Houston area) The Lima’s son, Tyrone has been hospitalized (from Mark & Pam Prow)

I spoke with Diane Lima a few minutes ago and here is the latest on their son, Tyron.

He was moved from ICU to isolation once the Pulmonologist diagnosed the flu as part of his illness.  They will not know for 10 days until the results are back the exact type of flu but the Swine Flu is suspected.  Now both of Tyron’s children have come down with the flu as well.

He is scheduled for an angioplasty on Friday to determine what is wrong with his heart as some of his test have indicated there is something wrong including the enlarged heart.

There is also an issue with his gallbladder but it is low priority right now until they get the heart issue diagnosed.

Please continue to keep the Tyron and the entire Lima family in your prayers as they are going through a difficult time.

Thanks,

Pam Prow

9/5/09: Dorothy Butler (Houston area) assaulted (from Marilyn Brooks)

Dorothy,

I am very sad to hear of your ordeal in the HEB parking lot.  Thank God,

you were not more seriously injured.

It is so sad when I think back to the time when seeing a friend on TV was

showing them having a great time at a dance, or some other celebration of

 their life.

I hope the exposure of this man brings the culprit to someone's attention

and they can identify him.  I understand it was on channel 13 at 4:30.

When Al Prince called me and said he had seen it, I saw that they were going to

view it on channel 26 at 5:00.  I watched it on 26.

Note:  For those of you with the Melody Dancers, Dorothy was robbed and

pushed down in a parking lot at Hwy 59 and the Grand Parkway a week ago.

The culprit didn't get out of his truck.  He parked next to Dorothy and Jim

and called her over with the pretense of obtaining directions.  He was later

filmed trying to use her credit card at a quick stop store.  The picture is

quite clear and someone has to know who he is.

9/3/09: Deana Palmer (Show Low, MN) to have surgery (from Bill Babcock via Darrell & Karen Nelson and Gene Severance)

Gene:  This just came in from Deana's friend, Bill Babcock, here in Show Low

The latest scoop as of 7:00pm Show Low time:

Deana is scheduled for surgery this Fri. at approx. 8:00 am Minnesota time.

She has chosen the mechanical valve---today while the other valves and arteries were being checked the Dr. noticed that the bicuspid valve was not closing properly and will need a new "seat" installed.

Everything else looks good, she has been taken off of the Thyroid meds at least for now.

More news later.

Dear Bob and Carol,

Wendell had triple bypass surgery and open heart surgery on Sept. 1.   He is progressing well on the road to recovery although as many of you know, it is no picnic.

We thought of everyone at Eureka Springs.  This is the first time we have missed but things have a way of working out.  Thank goodness, we were in Nebraska

9/1/09: Tony Speranzo (San Angelo, TX) Update (from Tony)

Mike,

I would like first to thank you for your concern.  All I know at this point is that I will be at Christus Santa Rosa Northwest in their Transplany ICU following the surgery.  I don't know when this will occur as they will call me.  They told me I could be called anytime, therefore I can't stray from home as I have to be at the hospital in about 4 hours after they call me.

Remember, I am not there yet, and I don't know when I will be.  So tell everyone not to send any cards to the hospital as they did when I first sent the e-mail telling everyone that I was going into the hospital.  A lot of people sent cards but I wasn't there yet even though I told them I wouldn't be there until the 27th of July.

Remember I am not at the hospital until after I get the call.  If I have the time, I will let you know as soon as I get the call.

Here's what's happening now.  I am at home but I have an IV with medication called Melrinone being pumped into my arm through a Pickk line (not spelled wrong).  I will have this until I get my new heart.  When that occurs, my defibrillator/pacemaker will also be removed.  I have home health care come out twice a week to change my IV bag, and one of those days they replace the bandage covering the Pickk line.

Thanks,

8/31/09: Tony Speranzo (San Angelo, TX): Still waiting for heart transplant (From Tony via TRDTA Newsletter)

…As far as my medical condition is going, I’m still awaiting a transplant.  I met with one of the surgeons and my transplant specialist on Monday, August 24th and they stated I am on the 1B Heart Transplant list.  They did get one call from a donor heart, however, for some reason they rejected that heart.  They don’t believe it will be that long for me to get a new heart.

The one thing that bothers me is that someone has to die in order for me to get a new heart.  This bothers me a lot when I think about it.

Enough about me…
